Working Hard for Indigenous Communities

As an active member of Amnesty International, human rights are dear to my heart. In particular, since being elected, recognizing and implementing Indigenous rights is one of my key priorities. I believe that we must renew the relationship with Indigenous peoples through rights, cooperation, and partnership.

In Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, I have worked hard for our Indigenous community by:

  • Meeting with Chief Giesbrecht from the Kwikwetlem First Nations quarterly.
  • Working with the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and members of the Kwikwetlem Salmon Restoration Project toward restoring the sockeye salmon run in the Coquitlam River.

As a government we…

  • Will lift ALL long-term drinking water advisories by March 2021
  • Created, and are working with, the Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee for the Trans Mountain pipeline.
  • Have dismantled the Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, and replaced it with the Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and the Department of Indigenous Services.
  • Supported Bill C-262, which calls for the government to fully implement commitments made under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
